Equality Statement
At Birchwood Grove Primary School, we are committed to providing an inclusive, welcoming and respectful environment where every child, family and member of staff is valued and treated fairly.
We believe that every child has the right to feel safe, included and able to achieve their best, regardless of their background, circumstances or individual characteristics.
We recognise our duties under the Equality Act 2010 and are committed to eliminating discrimination, promoting equality of opportunity and fostering positive relationships across our school community.
We work to ensure that no member of our community is treated less favourably because of any of the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010:
age
disability
gender reassignment
marriage and civil partnership
pregnancy and maternity
race
religion or belief
sex
sexual orientation
We understand that equality does not always mean treating everyone in exactly the same way. Some children and families may need additional support, reasonable adjustments or different approaches to ensure that they can access the same opportunities and participate fully in school life.
Our commitment to equality is reflected in our:
Curriculum – providing children with opportunities to learn about diversity, respect, different cultures, beliefs, identities and experiences.
Teaching and learning – ensuring that high expectations apply to every child and that barriers to learning are identified and addressed.
SEND and inclusion provision – providing appropriate support and reasonable adjustments so that children with additional needs can participate fully in school life.
Behaviour and relationships – promoting kindness, respect and understanding while challenging discrimination, prejudice, bullying and discriminatory language.
Pastoral support – recognising and responding to the individual needs and circumstances of children and families.
Leadership and governance – monitoring equality and inclusion and taking action where inequalities or barriers are identified.
Staff development – ensuring that staff understand their responsibilities and have the knowledge and confidence to promote equality and inclusion.
We value the diversity of our school community and see difference as something that enriches the experiences of our children.
We are committed to creating a school where everyone belongs, everyone is respected and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Equality Objectives
Our equality objectives are reviewed regularly and are designed to address identified barriers and improve outcomes and experiences for our pupils.
Our current priorities include:
Ensuring that all pupils, including those with SEND and other additional needs, can access and participate fully in school life.
Reducing barriers to achievement and ensuring that all pupils have high expectations and equitable opportunities to succeed.
Promoting positive attitudes towards diversity and difference and challenging prejudice, discrimination and stereotypes.
Ensuring that equality, inclusion and belonging are reflected in our curriculum, policies, practice and wider school culture.
We will monitor the impact of our actions and use information about our pupils and school community to identify where further action is needed.
